I am an award winning director known for making visually inventive, beautifully crafted films. I have been working in film and television for more than twenty years and have directed films that have been shown around the world.
Most recently I have made a series of Arts biographies all of which have either been nominated for, or have won awards. Lee Miller: Life on the Frontline won the Bafta Best Director [factual] and Bafta Best Editing 2021. Leonora Carrington: The Lost Surrealist won both the Grierson Best Arts Film Award and an RTS. Other recent subjects have been Egon Schiele and Sylvia Plath. I am particularly interested in telling women’s stories.
Although Arts is where I began, I have made documentaries on a diverse range of subjects over the years. I retraced the footsteps of Cortes for a feature-length documentary about the conquest of Mexico and just to demonstrate that I wasn’t all about pens and paintbrushes, I crossed the Sahara with desert nomads for a Channel 4 documentary about the hottest place in the world.
I have also directed a varied range of drama. I directed a feature length adaptation of a Glynebourne stage show ‘Zoe’ and wrote and directed my own short which got selected for screening at both the London Short Film Festival and Aesthetika - both Bafta qualifying festivals. I have also directed £1m plus dramas/drama docs for the Museum of Islamic Art and the Qatar Foundation broadcast on Qatar TV on Qatar National Day and used across many platforms in the country.
I relish the unique access to people and places that documentaries offer but I also love the chance that drama gives to create a world from a blank page.
